Tony Thien

An individual who alleged vote buying activities in the Balai Ringin state constituency now claimed to have received death threats from the person who allegedly offered him a bribe of RM22.

On May 26, Ampet Raweng of Kampung Tanah Manang lodged a police report on May 26 at the Serian police station that Muthu Sambang had offered him the bribe to vote for Barisan Nasional candidate Snowdan Lawan.

He also gave the police the two RM10 and two RM1 notes allegedly given to him by Muthu.

According to the Ampet’s latest police report lodged on June 1, Muthu bumped into Ampet in the village and in a fit of rage, verbally threatened to kill the latter.

Silencing the people

Commenting on the death threat, polls watchdog Mafrel chairperson Abdul
Malek Hussin said that it was a serious offence and that police should provide protection for complainants in life-threatening situations.

“There must be an end to intimidations and acts of retributions against genuine complaints,” he said, adding the police must further investigate what he called politically-inspired heinous acts.

Abdul Malek said such threats were clearly calculated to silence people and thus must be never be condoned.

The Mafrel chief said he planned to meet with top-ranking police officers to discuss the many police reports already made concerning allegations of bribery and money politics.

Even one of Mafrel’s officials, Lawrance Gamjap, who was monitoring the Opar and Tasik Biru seats received similar threats on his mobile phone.

In the May 20 polls, BN won 62 seats out of 71 seats up for grabs.
