JAKARTA: Ten Malaysians were arrested by Indonesian authorities in
Manokwari, Papua province on charges of violating the country's forestry
and immigration laws, news reports said yesterday.
Ichdar Supi, head of the public prosecutor's office in Manokwari,
3,016km north-east of here, said the 10 Malaysians were being detained
at police headquarters while their cases were being processed, according
to the state-run Antara news agency.
The suspects, whose names were not disclosed, were arrested in Sorong,
300km west of Manokwari, after police found thousands of cubic metres of
logs and heavy vehicles in their possession belonging to the Cahaya
Mukti Raharja Company.
Malaysia had banned the import of Indonesian logs last June to assist
Indonesia in stopping trade in illegally-cut logs from its forest
reserves.
