Customary land trespassed since 1998, landowners annoyed

SIBU, Wed: An elderly man and two of his sons have made three police reports since 1998 and claimed that their customary land at Bukit Kesa, Sungai Rau, Balingian has been trespassed on by a logging company.

The father, Sendar ak Ujan who is 70 years of age and his son, Milin told police that the company felled a number of trees in their land measuring 60 acres with a approximated income of RM1 million in the timber market.

Milin told reporters yesterday, even though three police reports have been made unfortunately no follow-up action was taken on the reports.

He also mentioned that the matter was referred to the Forest Department but the disappointing thing was that their complaints fell on deaf ears.

The man aged 36 years went on to say that they only realised that their land had been trespassed on since 28 February 1998 when they saw logging activities going on there.

They made police reports after seeing the company's activities.

"The logging company did not obtained any consent nor made an agreement with us to log in our land," he said.

"We brought the matter up to explained to them and on 14 September 1999, their officer on duty at the area only gave us RM200 as compensation.

The payment voucher was signed but no agreement was made," he said.

He added, now company has stopped logging in their land and has moved to the adjacent land.

Milin was also informed that, the workers of the company still continue to go in and out of their land to fell trees there. - UB
