FEDERAL COURT APPEAL ON

LANDMARK ORANG ASLI LAND RIGHTS CASE

Sagong Tasi & 6 others versus State Government of Selangor, Federal Government, LLM & UEM

Federal Court, Putrajaya

Monday, 14 April 2008

9.30 am

Question: On the issue of Orang Asli rights to their traditional lands, as upheld by the High Court and the Court of Appeal, Will the new Selangor State Government see eye-to-eye with the Federal Government?

The Selangor State Government and the Federal Government have submitted a joint appeal against the lower court’s decision to recognise the rights of the Temuan-Orang Asli to their traditional lands.

The case involves the forcible acquisition of Orang Asli land in Dengkil, Selangor for the construction of the Nilai-KLIA highway in 1995.

The Federal Court will hear submissions from the Federal and Selangor State Governments, United Engineers Malaysia Berhad (UEM) and Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) seeking to overturn the landmark ruling in the High Court and Court of Appeal recognising Orang Asli rights to their traditional lands.

Dato Dr. Cyrus Das leads the team of pro bono lawyers from the Bar Council.
