Manser family shocked by Credit Suisse involvement in million-dollar deal with Malaysian loggers

The family of missing Swiss rainforest and human rights activist Bruno Manser is shocked to hear about the involvement of Credit Suisse in the public listing of the Malaysian Samling group. Samling is responsible for the logging of large areas of tropical rainforest in the Malaysian state of Sarawak and for the destruction of the home of the Penan people.

„We are shocked to learn that a Swiss bank has agreed to such a deal. The Samling group is one of the driving forces behind the destruction of the Borneo rainforests which my brother tried to save for the Penan and for mankind“ said Erich Manser, speaking on behalf of the family of the missing Bruno Manser. „We appeal to the Credit Suisse CEO Oswald Gruebel and his successor Brady Dougan to terminate the co-operation with Samling immediately.“

In the course of several search missions for his missing brother, Erich Manser undertook extensive travels to the Penan communities living in remote rainforest areas of Eastern Sarawak. During his last visit, Erich Manser’s paths crossed with the head of the Samling group. „I saw for myself the horrendous destruction that Samling leaves behind in the rainforest. These people show a ruthless lack of conscience and only think about their short-term profits.“

Credit Suisse, along with HSBC and the Australian Macquarie Bank, is involved in preparations for the public listing of Samling at the Hongkong Stock Exchange. With this step, Samling hopes to raise around 280 Million US$ in order to finance expansion and to pay off debts. A roadshow in Europe is scheduled to begin next week. It is assumed that a successful public listing of Samling may earn Credit Suisse several million dollars.

Bruno Manser, who was one of the most credible and charismatic rainforest advocats, has vanished in Sarawak in May 2000. In March 2005, he was officially declared missing by a Swiss court.
